This piece struck me in a way. The way the light is coming from beneath him and how he looks straight at 'me'. Little things such as those; they really give the feeling of awe and wonder. The technique to draw Scream upon a scale of this magnitude from Photoshop is quite different from your original works and shows true determination to learn how to use it.
Traits: Dark, Mysterious, Frightening, Awe-Inspiring. Everything a dragon is. But I believe we should include Thoughtful. It really makes you think... Why is the dragon letting out a roar? Leading the appreciator to stay and look at this work... Just to think.
The design overall is highly imaginative. The lighting, magnifique. Every muscle in this dragon's body stands out saying, "Look at me! I'm so strong!" That provides a big deal of Impact. The artist saw everything. And because the artist saw everything, we see everything. Down to the last tooth.
Greatest Aspect of this Piece: ---------------------------------- The lighting and the color of light. A different take on direction can lead the appreciator in a different direction. It illuminates from below, so who is shining the light up at the dragon? Oop, spoilers...
What came in close second would be the musculature of the dragon. The bony spikes protruding from it's head. It just breathes power! ----------------------------------
In summary, this piece amazed me so much, that the only thing I could find that needed improvement was in the background. I do love how the background makes the dragon stand out of course, bringing the focus in on what is important. But the background does feel like it got a short-straw.
Well this is quite the dragon portrait you have there, and in the see of I cannot help but think this is a dragoness and the screaming is because thieves have stolen from her clutch, well as my theory. I also like the way did this image, and based on all the descriptive info you could even do a a greyscale to color tutorial as you have done. All the same a great dragon image.
The way you did this one, it looks more like I can see the dragon's skin/muscle a lot better because it looks like it's got no scales. For me, this is a more informational piece of art.
Looks good! Or rather, fantastic! I really like the texture on the face. Nice job!
I usually do grayscale paintings with a coloy overlay, too, but I often use it as just an underpainting and then paint on top of it. That's really only because I can't overlay color very well. XD
Yes, sort of. I created a layer which on I only painted in grayscales(But I made many different small changes on other layers on which I then merged together), then I put another layer on top of that with the attribute "color", on which I made the basic background colors and "feeling" of the image, after that I made a new layer with the color attribute on which I colored the dragon, it only takes a few colors to get it right.
This way is much faster and easier than painting in colors from the beginning, simply because I don'thave to change color all the time to get the shading right, I just use about 4-5 different shades of gray(from light to dark) and each time I want to highlight or darken I create a new layer on which I can paint and erase, and by using a textured brush and a soft low opacity eraser I can get bot texture and smooth shadows at once.
